Local Clean Energy

Distributed generation, or on-site generation, is energy produced on a smaller scale than the typical fossil-fuel fired power plant and is usually generated closer to the consumer.

Clean distributed generation is a key component in making the energy grid cleaner and more reliable by increasing the amount of power on the grid that come from renewable fuel sources.

It also increases the efficiency of the grid by reducing the amount of energy lost during the transmission process because energy is used closer to where it is generated.

Past & Future Energy System by John Farrell

In 2013, we supported a section in the Comprehensive Energy Strategy that allows for clean distributed generation facilities to submeter--meaning a landlord that owns a clean on-site generator to charge tenants individually for the energy they consume. This legislation opens the door to more residents that want to use local, small-scale on-site generation from renewables like solar and combined heat and power. We also advocated for these submetering parties to retain all energy charges collected from tenants in a PURA docket on submetering regulations.
